Is hiding the same as minimizing?

Hiding puts all of an app's windows out of sight but leaves the app running. Minimizing a window sends that one window to the Dock. macOS already has shortcuts for both: Command-H hides the app, and Command-M minimizes the current window. Those shortcuts don't change when you use OmniDock.

Can I click to minimize windows instead?

Prefer minimizing? You can turn on OmniDock's minimize mode. It tries to minimize the app's normal windows that macOS lets it control—not just the current window. If some remain visible, OmniDock may hide the app instead. To minimize only one window, use its yellow button or Command-M.

Will hiding an app remove its Dock icon?

No. This setting hides the app's windows, not its Dock icon, and it doesn't quit the app. The icon stays available so you can click it to return. Hiding the Dock itself or organizing menu bar icons is a different task; this feature doesn't turn the Dock into a Windows taskbar.

Set it up

1. Open the OD menu bar item and choose Settings.
2. Open Window Preview and enable Dock Icon Hide / Show.
3. For this first test, leave Minimize Instead of Hiding off. You can choose that option later after reading the difference above.
4. Bring a running app forward from the Dock, click the same icon to hide it, then click once more to bring it back.

Nothing happens? Check that the setting is on and the permissions below are allowed, then follow the troubleshooting steps if needed. Turn the setting off whenever you want the original Dock behavior back.

Can I click a Dock icon again to hide the app?

With OmniDock's Dock Icon Hide / Show turned on, yes. A normal Dock click brings an app forward; Command-H is the built-in shortcut for hiding it. Here's how the repeated-click option works:

1. Click a running app's Dock icon while another app is active. OmniDock brings the selected app forward.
2. When that app is already frontmost, click its Dock icon again. OmniDock hides the app.
3. Click the icon later to bring the app and its windows forward again.

If you mostly use the mouse, this gives you a quick way to put an app away. The repeated-click habit may feel familiar from Windows, though hiding on Mac is different from minimizing.

What can macOS do without OmniDock?

macOS already supports hiding apps. A normal Dock click opens or activates an app; it is not a repeated-click hide toggle. These built-in actions need no extra utility:

• Command-H: hide the current app, rather than minimize just one window.
• Option-click the current app's Dock icon: hide that app and switch to the previous app. Hold Option and click the icon of the app that is currently in front.

With OmniDock's setting on, you can hide the frontmost app by clicking its Dock icon again, without holding Option. The distinction above explains hiding versus minimizing. See Apple's Dock guide and window controls guide.

Which permissions does it need?

• Input Monitoring is used on macOS versions that require it to detect the Dock click.
• Accessibility lets OmniDock identify the app you clicked, bring it forward, hide it, or minimize its windows as you've chosen.
